Affiliate marketing, at its core, is a service whereby another company (the 'network') sells your product or service (the 'merchant') through a series of websites which have signed up to use your service (the 'affiliates').
You, the merchant, via your website, are selling a product (eg music CDs), or may be trying to sign up clients (eg a share dealing account.) Your affiliates are a set of sites built by individuals in a whole area of niches devoted to selling the products and services of other companies (i.e. it may be a "deals" website, a "coupon" website, or a specialist information site in a very specific niche.) Although different affiliate marketers for the same product each have unique affiliate links, all these links point to the same website, your website.
