Affil' Marketing spread

Affiliate Marketing

Have others sell your product through their network.

What Is Affiliate Marketing?

Let's say that you own a commercial site with ambitious growth targets for the next 12 months. You've got your long term strategies - Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and Conversation Rate Optimisation (CRO) - locked in, but your financial directors are demanding to see results soon. What's the solution?

Affiliate marketing, at its core, is a service whereby another company (the 'network') sells your product or service (the 'merchant') through a series of websites which have signed up to use your service (the 'affiliates').

You, the merchant, via your website, are selling a product (eg music CDs), or may be trying to sign up clients (eg a share dealing account.) Your affiliates are a set of sites built by individuals in a whole area of niches devoted to selling the products and services of other companies (i.e. it may be a "deals" website, a "coupon" website, or a specialist information site in a very specific niche.) You pay a commission to the affiliate site once the visitor has converted - e.g. bought your product, or completed the registration process with validated user details.

You know that the visitor is from an affiliate because they link to your site through a special affiliate link. This link is unique to them and them alone. Other affiliates will have there own links which are all unique. Although different affiliate marketers for the same product each have unique affiliate links, all these links point to the same website, your website. Via this technology you can ensure that you're never paying the wrong person for a sale.

As a channel it runs on a Cost Per Acquisition (CPA) basisĀ  - i.e., you only ever pay a percentage on a sale, so it never costs you anything unless the affiliate makes a sale on your behalf. There are many pitfalls to watch out for with affiliate marketing, however, and QueryClick are perfectly poised to help you through the process.

3. Paid search integration
Affiliates can often engage in "bid arbitrage", bidding on cheap brand keywords in Google AdWords to try and take sales they should otherwise not be. QueryClick have much experience in taking control of this and ensuring that affiliates are not taking commission where they shouldn't.

4. Network / Affiliate experience
Affiliate marketing, at its core, is all about people. Negotiating rates with the top networks means you often can get a better commission rate, and knowing who the top affiliates in your sector are will bring in the vast majority of your sales - having a direct relationship with these affiliates can be hugely important.

5. Display experience
You don't want your affiliate and display banners to be exactly the same. They must be consistent but drive a totally different message to stand out from each other in different places - we've run display, and we know what to do in the field.
